Occupied Pleasures presenta un ritratto sfumato e multidimensionale della capacità umana di trovare momenti di benessere in circostanze difficili nella Cisgiordania occupata, a Gerusalemme e a Gaza.
Occupied Pleasures si divide tra significati passivi e attivi: essere occupati sotto Israele, e occupare se stessi, con gioia e con sfida, nel passatempo e semplici piaceri. Più di quattro milioni di palestinesi vivono in Cisgiordania, Gaza e Gerusalemme Est, dove la situazione politica si intromette regolarmente nei momenti più banali. Il movimento è circoscritto e la minaccia di violenza spesso pende dall’alto. Questa situazione genera il più forte dei desideri anche per il più piccolo dei piaceri, assieme ad un pungente senso dell’umorismo riguardo le assurdità che un’occupazione di 47 anni ha prodotto.
Occupied Pleasures è stato annunciato dalla rivista TIME e dallo Smithsonian come uno dei migliori libri fotografici del 2015 (vincendo un premio World Press Photo nel 2014).
Occupied Pleasures presents a nuanced, multi-dimensional portrayal of humanity’s ability to find pleasure in the face of trying circumstances in Occupied West Bank, Jerusalem, and Gaza.
Occupied Pleasures straddles passive and active meanings: to be occupied under Israel, and to occupy oneself, joyfully and defiantly, in pastime and simple pleasures. More than four million Palestinians live in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem, where the political situation regularly intrudes upon the most mundane of moments. Movement is circumscribed and threat of violence often hangs overhead. This creates the strongest of desires for the smallest of pleasures, and a sharp sense of humour about the absurdities that a 47-year occupation has produced.
Occupied Pleasures was heralded by TIME magazine and Smithsonian as one of the best photo books of 2015 (winning a World Press Photo award in 2014).

Nata in Giordania e cresciuta tra Texas e Medio Oriente, Tanya Habjouqa si è guadagnata la reputazione di documentarista che porta politica e visione creativa nella stessa cornice. Con un focus su genere, identità e questioni socio-politiche nel Middle Est, c’è sempre uno strato di gravitas e un senso intuitivo di metafora sotto il suo lavoro. Tanya è un’artista, educatrice e membro dell’agenzia NOOR Images. Habjouqa adotta un approccio basato sulla serie, immerso nella ricerca e nelle pratiche giornalistiche, accademiche, concettuali e documentarie. Negli ultimi anni, i suoi progetti sono stati elogiati dal World Press Photo, TIME e Smithsonian. Viene assunta da organizzazioni come Amnesty International per realizzare campagne mediatiche internazionali, è una mentore per “ l’Arab Photography Documentary Program” e insegna workshop a livello internazionale. Il suo lavoro è stato esposto in tutto il mondo ed è nelle collezioni permanenti del MFA Boston, l’Institut du Monde Arabe, e il Carnegie Museum of art. Habjouqa è rappresentata dalla East Wing Gallery di Doha, Quatar.
Born in Jordan and raised between Texas and the Middle East, Tanya Habjouqa has earned a reputation for documentary that brings politics and creative vision into the same frame. With a focus on gender, identity, and socio-political issues in the Middle Est, there is always a layer of gravitas and an intuitive sense of metaphor beneath her work. Tanya is an artist, educator, and member of NOOR Images. Habjouqa takes on a series-based approach, immersed in research and interlaying journalistic, academic, conceptual, and documentary practices. In recent years, her projects have been commended by the likes of World Press Photo, TIME, and the Smithsonian. She is hired by organizations such as Amnesty International to make multi-country media campaigns. She is a mentor for the “Arab Photography Documentary Program” and teaches workshops internationally. Her work has been exhibited worldwide and is in the permanent collections of the MFA Boston, Institut du Monde Arabe, and the Carnegie Museum of art. Habjouqa is represented by East Wing Gallery in Doha, Quatar.
